Kenya’s first medals in the ongoing London Games came from Sally Kipyego and world champion Vivian Cheruiyot who took the 10,000m silver and bronze respectively, on Friday night at the Olympics Stadium.

Oregon-based Kipyego finished second in a time of 30:26.37 ahead of Cheruiyot’s 30:30.44.

Defending champion Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia bagged gold in an impressive 600m dash to the finish recording a time of 30:20.75.

Dibaba retained her 10,000m title, which she won at the Beijing Olympics. She becomes the second woman to win the 10,000m twice in the Olympics after Ethiopia’s Derartu Tulu who won in 1992 and 2000.

Double world champion Cheruiyot and compatriot Kipyego now set their eyes on the 5,000m heats next week.
